OpenAI Unveils Sora 2 Video App with Advanced AI
The latest version of OpenAI's video generator, Sora 2, has been unveiled. Sora 2 is an upgraded video and audio generation model that boasts enhanced photorealistic video capabilities. Additionally, a new Sora app has been introduced as a social platform for users to share, remix, and discover AI-generated videos.
Sora 2, revealed in a livestream on Tuesday, is part of a new wave of generative AI tools that enable users to create more realistic images, videos, and audio. This model allows users to create "cameos" of themselves and others in videos, requiring a one-time video and audio recording for identity verification.
The Sora app, like other social media platforms, will offer a personalized feed of videos based on users' interests and interactions. It includes a "steerable ranking" system for users to customize their viewing preferences. Sora 2 is an advancement from the original Sora model released in February 2024.
OpenAI stated that Sora 2 has improved in representing realistic motion, such as adhering to the laws of physics. Demos on the OpenAI website showcased photorealistic action shots, although some imperfections were noted, indicating progress in simulating reality.
The model can now generate speech, a feature lacking in the previous version. OpenAI highlighted that while the model is not flawless, scaling up neural networks on video data brings them closer to simulating reality.
The Sora app, powered by Sora 2, is now available for download on iOS devices through invite-only access. OpenAI plans to gradually expand access in the United States and Canada, with initial limits on video creation due to the computing power required. The company may introduce paid options for additional video generation to manage demand.
To address concerns about potential risks, OpenAI will watermark all Sora-generated videos and include industry-standard metadata to indicate AI creation. Users' likenesses can only be used with consent, which can be revoked at any time. Teen accounts on Sora will have parental controls and usage time limits to ensure safety.
OpenAI emphasized the importance of Sora 2 as a step towards more powerful AI systems that will reshape society and accelerate human progress. The company is also expanding its team of human moderators to review content for safety, including blocking unsafe material during video creation.
