The co-owner of Lune Croissanterie, a renowned Australian bakery, issued an apology after a private message was leaked where he questioned Israel's legitimacy and made controversial remarks about hostages held by Hamas.
Cameron Reid, who manages the bakery with his sister Kate, posted on Instagram urging an immediate ceasefire in Gaza. In response to a follower's question about Hamas hostages, Reid criticized Israel, accusing it of apartheid and violence.
Hamas seized nearly 230 hostages in a terrorist attack on October 7, including children and elderly individuals. Only four hostages have been released to date.
Reid's comments sparked backlash within Jewish communities, leading to calls for a boycott of the bakery. Some criticized his remarks as anti-Semitic and anti-human.
Following the criticism, Reid issued a public apology, expressing regret for his comments and clarifying that he respects the Jewish community and condemns violence. He acknowledged the need to educate himself further on the situation.
Lune Croissanterie, established by Kate Reid in 2012, gained popularity for its pastries, with locations in Melbourne and Brisbane drawing long queues. Despite the apology, some social media users vowed to boycott the café in response to Reid's remarks.
