Padres acquire Ryan O’Hearn and Ramón Laureano in Orioles trade

The San Diego Padres made a significant trade on Thursday, acquiring All-Star designated hitter Ryan O’Hearn and outfielder Ramón Laureano from the Baltimore Orioles. In exchange, the Padres gave up a group of prospects including pitchers Boston Bateman, Tyson Neighbors, and Tanner Smith, as well as infielders Cobb Hightower, Brandon Butterworth, and Victor Figueroa.

O’Hearn, who was designated for assignment by the Kansas City Royals in January 2023, has had a strong season with the Orioles, earning his first All-Star selection. He has a batting average of .283, an on-base percentage of .374, and an OPS of .837. O’Hearn, primarily a designated hitter, also has experience playing first base and in the outfield.

Although O’Hearn does not have high power numbers, he has a well-rounded offensive game with a good mix of power, on-base ability, and hitting for average. He will be owed around $2.5 million for the remainder of the season as he approaches free agency.

Laureano, known for his offensive prowess, has been a valuable player for the Orioles this season. He has excelled as a right-handed bench bat and has shown better performance against right-handed pitchers. Laureano, who signed a $4 million deal with the Orioles, has been a key contributor in the outfield and in the lineup.

The trade has been seen as a significant move for the Padres, with O’Hearn and Laureano expected to strengthen the team. The Padres have been active in making acquisitions, aiming to improve their chances in the World Series. The Orioles, on the other hand, have focused on acquiring minor leaguers and pitching prospects in their trades.
