Padres Trade Top Prospect for Mason Miller in Major Deal
A year ago, San Diego Padres' closer Mason Miller was highly valued. Just before the trade deadline, the Padres made a significant move to acquire him.
The Padres have agreed to get Miller and left-handed starter JP Sears from the A’s. In return, they are sending top prospect Leo De Vries, and right-handed pitchers Braden Nett, Henry Báez, and Eduarniel Nuñez to the A’s, as per sources.
De Vries, 18, is performing well in High A, hitting above the league average. He is a switch hitter, stronger from the left side, and is considered a potential star by experts.
Nett, 23, was ranked as the Padres’ No. 7 prospect. He has shown good performance in Double-A San Antonio this season with a 3.39 ERA and 86 strikeouts in 74.1 innings pitched.
The deal will strengthen the Padres' bullpen, which already leads in various pitching statistics. Miller, a 2024 American League All-Star, has a 3.16 ERA and 48 saves in his first three big-league seasons.
Miller, 26, is under team control until 2029 and might be considered for a starting role next season. The A’s did not use Miller in a save situation recently, and there were no reported injuries.
The Padres are also expected to trade Suarez and Cease to manage their payroll and address other needs.
