Penguins Trade for Goaltender Silovs from Canucks
When the Pittsburgh Penguins were successful under Jim Rutherford, they had a surplus of goaltending talent. Rutherford's Vancouver Canucks, also facing a surplus of goalies, traded Arturs Silovs to the Penguins. In return, the Penguins sent a 2027 fourth-round NHL Draft pick and prospect Chase Stillman to the Canucks.
Silovs, a 24-year-old Latvian goalie, gained attention during the 2024 NHL postseason when he helped the Canucks. Despite a tough regular season, he excelled in the AHL playoffs, leading his team to victory and being named MVP.
Silovs, known for his international success, joins the Penguins' young goalie group. He is set to count $850,000 against the salary cap this season and can become a restricted free agent after the 2025-26 season.
The Penguins' General Manager announced the trade, mentioning the acquisition of Stillman and a fourth-round pick in the 2027 NHL Entry Draft from the Penguins in exchange for Silovs.
Silovs has a chance to compete for a spot on the Penguins' NHL roster. While Tristan Jarry is expected to be the starting goalie, Silovs could challenge for playing time given his talent and experience in big games.
Silovs is seen as a skilled goalie who performs well in crucial moments but needs more consistency to establish himself in the NHL. The trade provides him with a new opportunity to prove himself with the Penguins.
