Former Nigeria Super Eagles Goalkeeper Peter Rufai Dies at 61
Former Nigeria Super Eagles Captain and goalkeeper Peter Rufai passed away on Thursday morning, 3 July, at the age of 61. The news was confirmed by the Super Eagles.
Rufai had been battling illness in recent weeks and was hospitalized in Lagos where he succumbed at approximately 6am. The team expressed their condolences, stating that he would be "forever in our hearts."
The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) also confirmed the news, hailing Rufai's legacy as a legend between the sticks.
"It is truly shocking," said NFF General Secretary, Dr Mohammed Sanusi, speaking from Abuja. "We are still trying to process the news of Peter Rufai's passing. May God rest his soul and comfort his loved ones."
Throughout his career, Rufai was a prominent figure in Nigerian football. He was the first-choice goalkeeper for the national team during the 1994 and 1998 FIFA World Cups and played a pivotal role in Nigeria's triumph at the 1994 African Cup of Nations. He made his debut for the team in 1981 and went on to represent them for 17 years.
Rufai also enjoyed professional stints in Belgium, Netherlands, Portugal, and Spain. After his retirement, he dedicated himself to mentoring young players and served as the coordinator of the Nigeria U23 team.
