US President Donald Trump has removed Secret Service protection for former Vice President Kamala Harris, who was his Democratic rival in the 2024 election. The decision was confirmed by a senior adviser to Harris, Kirsten Allen. Typically, former vice presidents receive six months of security detail from the Secret Service after leaving office, but Harris had been granted an 18-month extension. This extension was initially set to last until January 2026, following an executive memorandum signed by then-President Joe Biden.

The Secret Service official informed NBC that Biden had further extended Harris's protection to 18 months before leaving office. Former US presidents receive lifelong Secret Service protection. The reasons for revoking Harris's protection have not been disclosed by the White House. However, decisions on security detail extensions are usually based on advice from the Department of Homeland Security, considering the perceived threat level.

Kamala Harris, the first woman and first African American to serve as vice president, is also known for her role as the Democratic candidate in the 2024 election against Donald Trump. She is set to begin a book tour for her memoir, "107 Days," which reflects on her brief candidacy period. The extension of federal protection for Harris was seen as necessary due to her symbolic status and increased public engagements, ensuring her safety during extensive public appearances.

The decision to remove Harris's Secret Service protection is likely to be criticized by the president's opponents. Harris, who lost the 2024 election to Trump, is scheduled to promote her memoir through a book tour. Trump has also ended federal security protection for other individuals, including former national security adviser John Bolton and Joe Biden's children, Hunter and Ashley Biden. Harris has not ruled out a potential presidential run in 2028 and announced in July that she would not run for governor of California in 2026.
