Born Michael D'Angelo Archer, the musician was known for his emotionally powerful music. His family described his fight against cancer as "prolonged and courageous."

D'Angelo gained fame in the 1990s with his debut album, "Brown Sugar." One of the album's tracks, "Lady," peaked at No. 10 in March 1996 and stayed on Billboard's Hot 100 chart for 20 weeks.
