Real Betis Back Out of Antony Transfer Deal from Man United
Manchester United faced a setback in their transfer plans as Real Betis unexpectedly withdrew from the deal to sign Antony, despite agreeing on a £21.6 million transfer fee for the Brazilian player.
Real Betis, who had previously helped Antony regain his form during a loan spell, stated in a brief 33-word announcement that they could not afford the financial terms agreed with Manchester United. The Spanish club cited issues with the overall cost of the deal.
Earlier the same day, Manchester United had finalized a £21.6 million deal with Real Betis, which included a 50% sell-on clause. Antony was granted permission to travel to Spain to conclude the agreement. However, disagreements persisted over personal terms, severance payment, and wage differences that Antony's representatives claimed were still unresolved.
Real Betis clarified that they were withdrawing from the transfer due to the financial implications, emphasizing that they could not meet the transfer fee and the additional amounts United would have to pay Antony before the move.
The negotiation process has stalled due to Antony's high wage demands and the total expenses involved. Manchester United views this development as a bargaining tactic while awaiting Antony's decision on the severance terms. Betis insists that United must revise the terms for a potential agreement to be reached.
Antony, who spent time with friends and Betis' representatives on Friday evening, has two years remaining on his contract with Manchester United. Despite winning domestic trophies with the club, he has faced challenges and has not met expectations during his time at Old Trafford. Antony has also represented Brazil internationally, earning 16 caps, with his most recent appearance in 2023.
