Saddam Hussein's Deputy Dies of Heart Attack Before Execution
Tariq Aziz, the Iraqi diplomat known for staunchly supporting Saddam Hussein and later sentenced to death, has passed away at the age of 79 in a hospital in southern Iraq. Aziz, the highest-ranking Christian in Saddam's regime, died in Nasiriyah after being in custody awaiting execution. He was sentenced to death in 2010 for persecuting Shiite Muslims.
Aziz, who was the only Christian among Saddam's top officials, had faced multiple trials for regime crimes. Despite being sentenced to death, Iraq's president at the time refused to sign the execution order due to Aziz's age and religion. Aziz had suffered from health issues, including strokes, while in custody.
Known for his eloquence and loyalty to Saddam, Aziz was a key figure in Iraq's communication with the West. He was recognized internationally as a spokesperson for Saddam's regime. Despite being a prominent figure, some argued he was not a key decision-maker in the regime's actions against Iraqis.
Born in 1936, Aziz joined the Baath Party in 1957 and played a significant role in Iraq's diplomatic relations, including efforts to prevent the Gulf War. He defended Saddam in court and was convicted in several cases related to crimes against humanity. Despite pleas for mercy from the Vatican and European diplomats, Aziz was sentenced to death in 2010.
