Senators Optimistic for LeBreton Site Deal Before Fall
Ottawa Senators Making Progress on New Arena Deal
The Ottawa Senators are in talks with the National Capital Commission (NCC) to secure a 10-acre plot of land at LeBreton Flats for a new arena closer to downtown Ottawa. The team and the NCC had agreed in principle on the project last September, aiming to finalize the deal by 2025.
Senators owner Michael Andlauer expressed optimism about the negotiations, indicating that both parties are working closely to make the project a reality. The NCC and the Senators are reportedly making significant progress, with a potential resolution expected by late September.
Once the deal is finalized, the Senators will begin the process of building their new event center. However, before construction can commence, the team needs to address various logistical and financial aspects, including studies on mobility, transport, parking, and financing.
The Senators plan to remain at the Canadian Tire Centre in Kanata for at least the next five years while the new arena is being developed. The team's current home has undergone recent upgrades, including the replacement of older seats in the lower bowl with leather-bound ones.
While improvements are being made to the existing arena, the Senators are focused on creating a state-of-the-art facility at LeBreton Flats that will serve as a hub for entertainment and attract visitors from Ottawa and Gatineau. Despite ongoing enhancements to the Canadian Tire Centre, major renovations are unlikely as the team looks ahead to its future downtown venue.
