Springbok's Jasper Wiese sent off in South Africa vs. Italy rugby match
Jasper Wiese received a red card during the South Africa vs Italy match after being penalized for a headbutt against an opponent at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Gqeberha. The incident occurred in the 22nd minute, leading to Wiese's expulsion from the game.
The clash between the two teams escalated in the first half, culminating in Wiese forcefully moving his head towards Italy's Danilo Fischetti. Following a review of the incident, referee Andrew Brace made the decision to send off Wiese for deliberate and dangerous foul play, despite protests from Springboks' head coach Rassie Erasmus.
As a result of the red card, Wiese faces a suspension of multiple weeks. The Springboks, with Wiese's absence, are set to play against Georgia at the Mbombela Stadium on 19 July. Meanwhile, Cobus Wiese made his debut for the Springboks during the match, becoming another brother to represent South Africa.
Although Elrigh Louw was also sin binned for a shoulder-led tackle, resulting in the Springboks playing with 13 men for 10 minutes, the disciplinary actions did not significantly impact the world champions. Despite the setbacks, South Africa emerged victorious with a 45-0 win in Gqeberha, with Edwill van der Merwe delivering an impressive performance on his second cap.
