Supertramp Co-Founder Rick Davies Passes Away
Rick Davies, a founding member of the British rock band Supertramp, has passed away at the age of 81 after a long battle with multiple myeloma, a type of blood cancer. The band confirmed his death in a statement.
Davies, known for hits like Breakfast In America and The Logical Song, co-wrote many songs with Roger Hodgson, the band's lead singer. The statement praised Davies for his musical contributions and described him as a warm individual.
The band highlighted Davies's musical legacy and personal qualities, mentioning his soulful vocals and talent on the Wurlitzer. Despite health challenges that prevented him from touring with Supertramp, Davies continued to perform with a local group called Ricky and the Rockets.
Born in Swindon, Wiltshire, in 1944, Davies developed a love for music in his youth, influenced by jazz, blues, and rock 'n' roll. He and Hodgson founded Supertramp in 1969, with the band achieving success in the 1970s and 1980s.
Supertramp's notable albums and hit singles, including Crime of the Century and Breakfast In America, solidified their place in rock music history. Davies remained a constant member of the band after Hodgson's departure in 1983.
In recent years, Davies was involved in legal disputes over royalties with former bandmates. Despite plans for a reunion tour in 2015 being canceled due to his cancer diagnosis, Davies continued to leave a lasting impact on the music industry.
Davies is survived by his wife Sue, who had been managing the band since the mid-80s.
