Taylor Fritz ousted by Mikael Ymer in Wimbledon

No. 9 seed Taylor Fritz, an American player, was defeated at Wimbledon on Thursday by Sweden’s Mikael Ymer in a five-set match in the second round.

Fritz, who reached the quarterfinals at Wimbledon last year and was the top-ranked American player and world No. 9 coming into the tournament, suffered a surprising loss after being two sets up. The match was challenging for Fritz, who had just completed a rain-interrupted five-set first-round match the day before.

Ymer, aged 24 and ranked world No. 59, overcame Fritz to reach his first-ever third round at Wimbledon. He will face Colombia’s Daniel Elahi Galan in the next round.

Fritz, who was a quarterfinalist at Wimbledon last year, has not progressed beyond the third round in his last three Grand Slam appearances. He was eliminated in the second round at this year’s Australian Open by Australia’s Alexei Popyrin and at the 2023 French Open by Argentina’s Francisco Cerundolo.

Additionally, Stephens, a former Wimbledon quarterfinalist in 2013, lost in three sets to Vekic (4-6, 7-5, 6-4), while Collins, a finalist at the 2022 Australian Open, was defeated by Bencic in a third-set tiebreak (3-6, 6-4, 7-6 (2)).
