Teen Fan Accidentally Snatches Home Run from Player
Minutes after a standout moment in Monday's Home Run Derby, Sam Musterer was seen in the Atlanta Braves' bullpen, replaying a video on his phone. Musterer, a 17-year-old, made a remarkable catch against Tampa Bay Rays' Junior Caminero during the final round of the derby. Despite the excitement, umpires ruled it a home run.
Musterer, who attends Pope High School in Marietta, Ga., and plays baseball for the East Side Chargers select team, was at the event because his father, Richard, works as an official scorer at Braves games. Richard is also involved in broadcasting Georgia Tech sports. Musterer, a right-handed pitcher and center fielder, expressed surprise at his exceptional play, stating he had never made such a catch before.
Although Musterer's catch did not alter the derby's outcome, it gained attention online. The eventual champion of the event was Cal Raleigh, who received a trophy, a chain, and a championship belt. Despite some light-hearted remarks from Caminero's teammate Brandon Lowe, the incident was not a source of real controversy.
The memorable play by Musterer is likely to be remembered for years to come, even though some players, like Raleigh, joked about the catch. Johnny Flores Jr. and Jayson Stark contributed to this report.
