Thai forces clash with Cambodian villagers, injuring dozens

Thai security forces fired rubber bullets and tear gas at Cambodian protesters during a violent confrontation along a disputed border area, leaving at least 28 people injured. The clashes occurred near Ban Nong Ya Kaeo in Thailand’s Sa Kaeo province, known as Prey Chan village in Banteay Meanchey province, Cambodia.

Thai officials stated that around 200 Cambodian civilians tried to dismantle barbed wire fences, throwing rocks, sticks, and using slingshots against officers. The villagers were protesting the deployment of barriers and wire along the border, according to Thailand’s army.

Cambodia accused Thai forces of entering its territory and using tear gas, rubber bullets, and noise devices against civilians, including monks who were injured. Cambodia condemned the incident as a violation of its sovereignty and sought international support to prevent further escalation.

Thailand maintained that its security forces acted within its borders and responded proportionately to restore order. Thai authorities described the removal of barricades by Cambodians as unlawful acts and a breach of the ceasefire agreement. The military reported injuries to five soldiers during the confrontation.

The border area has a history of disputes, dating back to colonial times. In July, a conflict between the two countries resulted in casualties and displacement of thousands. Despite a ceasefire agreement, tensions remain high, with accusations of new landmines being planted along the border.

The US State Department called for de-escalation and proposed an Asean-led observer mission to monitor the ceasefire. A meeting of the General Border Committee is scheduled to address the recent clashes and ongoing tensions between Thailand and Cambodia.
