Thailand shuts border with Cambodia post deadly clashes

China expressed deep concern over the escalating tensions at the Thai-Cambodian border, as stated by a Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson during a press briefing. The spokesperson, Guo Jiakun, emphasized the importance of resolving issues through dialogue and consultation, with China advocating for peace and dialogue to de-escalate the situation.

Chinese foreign minister Wang Yi previously urged Thailand and Cambodia to address their border dispute through dialogue, offering China's support for harmonious coexistence between the two nations. In response, Thailand's foreign ministry called on Cambodia to halt actions deemed as severe violations of international law and warned of increased self-defense measures in the face of continued armed attacks.

Cambodia accused Thailand of using excessive force along the border, prompting Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet to urge citizens to remain calm amid rising tensions. The situation escalated following clashes between Thai and Cambodian soldiers at a disputed border area, resulting in civilian casualties and injuries on both sides.

Cambodia has requested an urgent meeting of the United Nations Security Council to address the clashes, condemning Thailand's actions as reckless and hostile. Thailand, in turn, sealed its border with Cambodia, while urging its citizens to avoid the Thai-Cambodian border area. The Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office advised British citizens to exercise caution when traveling in border regions between Thailand and Cambodia.

The longstanding border dispute between Thailand and Cambodia dates back over a century, with sporadic clashes occurring over the years. Recent tensions peaked after a Cambodian soldier was killed, leading to heightened military presence and border restrictions by both countries. The conflict has drawn attention from ASEAN members, with efforts underway to de-escalate the situation and prevent further hostilities.
