Mark Gatiss Discusses New Detective Show 'Bookish'
Writer and actor Mark Gatiss has released his new detective show, Bookish, featuring a crime-solving book emporium owner in postwar London. In an interview, Gatiss shared his thoughts on the 1940s, iconic detectives, and working with Tom Cruise.
Gatiss expressed his affection for the postwar period, highlighting its significance in establishing the welfare state and the National Health Service. However, he emphasized the hardships faced by people during that time.
When asked about similarities between his character in Bookish and classic detectives like Sherlock Holmes, Gatiss noted the importance of a unique trait for each detective. He drew inspiration from Agatha Christie's Miss Marple, who solves crimes on a small scale.
Regarding his character's special item in Bookish, Gatiss revealed that it's a letter from Winston Churchill, serving the same purpose as the Doctor's psychic paper from another of Gatiss' projects.
Gatiss addressed the ongoing speculation about potential revivals of his previous shows like The League of Gentlemen and Sherlock. While he expressed interest in doing more Sherlock, he mentioned a proposed film idea that never materialized.
The interview also covered Gatiss' experiences working with Tom Cruise on the new Mission: Impossible films. He described Cruise as a funny and present individual on set. Gatiss expressed his desire to have Cruise star in his Bookish series if given the opportunity.
