Tragedy for Liverpool Stars: Diogo Jota and Brother Die in Crash
Premier League footballer Diogo Jota and brother Andre Silva die in car crash
Premier League footballer Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva, a professional player for Portuguese side Penafiel, have died following a car crash in Spain. The incident occurred at 00:30 local time on Thursday morning on the A-52 highway in the province of Zamora, north-west Spain.
Jota was travelling to the port of Santander to catch a ferry back to the United Kingdom ahead of his club Liverpool's return for preseason. He had recently undergone minor surgery and was advised not to travel by plane.
The Lamborghini car occupied by the brothers went off the road and collided with something, causing the vehicle to catch fire. The cause of the crash is under investigation.
Liverpool Football Club expressed their devastation over the tragedy, while Penafiel issued a statement offering condolences to the families of both players.
Jota, who joined Liverpool from Wolverhampton Wanderers in 2020, made 182 appearances for the club and scored 65 goals. He was a key player in Liverpool's recent successes, including the FA Cup and Carabao Cup wins in the 2021-22 season.
The Portuguese Football Federation and European football governing body UEFA have announced moments of silence for upcoming matches in tribute to the players.
