Toronto Raptors Extend GM Bobby Webster's Contract, Maintaining Masai Ujiri's President Role for Now
The Toronto Raptors have extended Bobby Webster's contract as general manager and will not replace Masai Ujiri as president for now, the team announced on Monday. Webster has been with the club since 2013.
The president position became vacant the day after the June draft when Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment, the Raptors' owner, announced Ujiri's firing. Despite considering other candidates, including partnering with CAA Executive Search, Webster will essentially take over the president's role.
Webster expressed his enthusiasm for the unique opportunity the Raptors offer, emphasizing the platform and potential in Canada. He highlighted the responsibilities that come with the job, including increased communication with the ownership.
Webster clarified that there was no tension between him and Ujiri during the process. Despite other candidates emerging, Webster was favored for the job due to his experience and respect in the NBA.
MLSE CEO Keith Pelley praised Webster's leadership style and vision for the team, confirming the decision to officially appoint him as the Raptors' leader.
Webster joined the Raptors as vice president of basketball management and strategy, eventually becoming the general manager in 2017. Pelley emphasized stability by retaining Webster after Ujiri's departure.
The Raptors had a quiet offseason, making minor moves in the draft and securing a contract extension with a player. Webster hinted at potential front office changes but stated there are no immediate plans.
Ujiri, who led the Raptors to their first championship in 2019, left the organization amid ownership changes. Despite speculation about his future, Ujiri maintained a professional stance.
