Trump directs DOJ to investigate Soros-backed group; Comey and Letitia James face charges.
Multiple U.S. Attorney's Offices Investigating Soros-Funded Group
Several U.S. attorney's offices are making plans to investigate a grant-making organization supported by Democratic donor George Soros, according to a recent report. The directive given to prosecutors in at least six offices includes considering charging the group with 'support for terrorism.'
This move follows reports confirming impending indictments for former FBI Director James Comey and New York Attorney General Letitia James. The directive, issued by Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche's office and obtained by the New York Times, aims to target another of President Donald Trump's political adversaries.
Prosecutors in California, New York, Washington, D.C., Chicago, Detroit, and Maryland have been instructed to explore various charges against Soros-funded Open Society Foundations, such as racketeering, arson, wire fraud, and material support for terrorism.
In response, the Open Society Foundations dismissed the allegations as politically motivated attacks on civil society, designed to stifle dissenting voices and undermine the First Amendment right to free speech. A lawyer in Blanche's office referred to a report by the conservative Capital Research Center, which claimed that Soros' group had channeled over $80 million to organizations linked to terrorism or extremist violence.
The report highlighted an instance where Open Society Foundations allegedly provided funding to a Palestinian human rights group called al-Haq, which Israel had previously accused of being a front for terrorist activities. The Capital Research Center, known for monitoring liberal financial activities in politics, prompted prosecutors in various jurisdictions to assess whether the claims in the report warrant opening criminal investigations.
U.S. attorneys have been instructed to prepare and submit their investigative plans promptly.
