Trump ends trade talks with Canada following Ontario ad featuring Reagan.
President Donald Trump announced on Thursday that he was ending trade discussions with Canada immediately. Trump accused Canada of trying to influence an upcoming Supreme Court case regarding the legality of his "reciprocal" tariffs. The announcement was made on Truth Social after the Canadian province of Ontario aired a television ad in the U.S. featuring a speech by former President Ronald Reagan.
In the ad, Reagan expressed concerns about the negative impact of trade barriers on American workers and consumers. The ad was broadcast during a game in the American League Championship Series, reaching over 9 million viewers. The Reagan Presidential Foundation and Institute stated that it was reviewing legal options due to the unauthorized use of Reagan's address by the Government of Ontario.
Canada is a significant trading partner of the United States, with over $410 billion worth of goods imported from Canada last year. Trump has previously halted trade talks with Canada in June, citing issues related to American tech companies and dairy farmers. Despite tensions, relations between the two countries appeared to have improved after Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney's visit to the White House in early October.
Trump emphasized the importance of mutual business interests between the U.S. and Canada during the White House meeting with Carney. However, Trump hinted at the need for Canada to prioritize American business interests as well.
