Donald Trump Sues The New York Times Over Defamation Claims
Donald Trump has filed a $15 billion defamation and libel lawsuit against The New York Times, accusing the newspaper of bias towards the Democrats and the MAGA movement. The lawsuit, brought in Florida, follows Trump's threat to sue the newspaper over its reporting on his connections to Jeffrey Epstein.
In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump criticized The New York Times for endorsing Kamala Harris in the previous presidential election and accused the newspaper of spreading lies and defamation about him for too long. He dismissed the newspaper's reporting on alleged notes he sent to Epstein as false.
The lawsuit comes after the publication of a lewd birthday message that Trump allegedly sent to Epstein in 2003. The message was among a collection of birthday tributes from various individuals, including a note from former British minister Peter Mandelson. Trump denied writing the note, pointing out discrepancies in the handwriting and signature.
In response to Trump's legal action, The New York Times reaffirmed its commitment to reporting facts and upholding journalists' First Amendment rights. The newspaper stated that it presented the facts, visual evidence, and Trump's denial for the public to form their own opinions.
