Israel and Hamas Reach Agreement on 60-Day Ceasefire

US President Donald Trump confirmed on his social media platform that Israel has agreed to the necessary conditions for a 60-day ceasefire in Gaza. The agreement is still unofficial, but Hamas officials expressed readiness to reach an agreement if it ends the conflict.

The proposed ceasefire includes collaboration from Qatar and Egypt in facilitating the deal. Israeli officials have expressed support for releasing hostages as part of the agreement.

The announcement comes ahead of a meeting between Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu next week. Trump has previously stated his belief that Netanyahu wants to end the conflict in Gaza.

Israel launched a military operation in Gaza on 7 October 2023 following an attack by Hamas. The conflict has resulted in over 56,647 fatalities in Gaza.

Previous attempts at ceasefire negotiations collapsed in March following renewed Israeli strikes on the territory.
