Hegseth: If women do not qualify for combat jobs, 'so be it'

US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has announced that the US military will require combatants to meet the "highest male standard" in physical fitness tests, which may result in excluding some women from serving.

Hegseth emphasized the need for uniform, gender-neutral, and high standards during his address to military leaders at Marine Corps Base Quantico near Washington DC. President Donald Trump also spoke at the summit, where security was tight and senior personnel gathered.

Hegseth's speech focused on cultural shifts within the military, emphasizing training, leadership, and addressing issues like diversity, equity, and inclusion programs. He announced changes to fitness standards, an end to unprofessional appearances, and anonymous complaints procedures.

Trump highlighted the reawakening of the warrior spirit and praised the achievements of the American military during his address. He also mentioned settling seven wars and expressed hope for a resolution with Hamas regarding Gaza.

The meeting, which drew officers from various military installations worldwide, was seen as unusual by some observers. Italian Admiral Giuseppe Cavo Dragone noted it was unprecedented in his 49 years of service. The purpose of the meeting was described as fostering unity and morale among troops.

Attendees, including officers from Europe, South Korea, and the Middle East, arrived early for the event. They were seated by branch of service and wore uniforms distinguishing their respective military branches. Some displayed campaign medals from serving in conflicts like Afghanistan and Iraq.
