
Victoria Mboko Upsets Coco Gauff, Advances to Montreal Quarter-Finals
Teenager Victoria Mboko caused an upset by defeating top seed Coco Gauff to advance to the quarter-finals of the Canadian Open in Montreal. The 18-year-old Canadian, who received a wildcard entry, beat Gauff 6-1 6-4 in just 62 minutes. Mboko has been climbing the rankings rapidly, converting four of five break points against Gauff and dropping only one set in four matches.
Mboko expressed her focus and composure during the match, especially with the pressure of playing in front of a large audience. She started the year ranked 333rd globally and went on a winning streak of 22 matches without dropping a set, winning five titles on the ITF Tour. After defeating Gauff, Mboko's ranking will rise from 85th to 53rd. In the quarter-finals, she will face Jessica Bouzas Maneiro, who is ranked just two places above her.
Gauff struggled with her serve, accumulating six double faults in the match, bringing her total to 43 in three matches. Despite the loss, Gauff acknowledged Mboko's potential for success in the future. In other matches, Iga Swiatek, the second seed, won 6-2 6-2 against Eva Lys, while Casper Ruud lost to Karen Khachanov in Toronto. Top seed Alexander Zverev advanced to the quarter-finals with a walkover victory against Francisco Cerundolo. Fifth seed Holger Rune was defeated by Alexei Popyrin after losing the lead early in the match.
