Whoopi Goldberg pleads to halt politicizing murder of Ukrainian immigrant

Whoopi Goldberg, a co-host on The View, spoke out against the politicization of the murder of Ukrainian immigrant Iryna Zarutska, who was killed on a train in Charlotte last month. Zarutska, 23, was fatally stabbed on August 22 by Decarlos Brown Jr., a 34-year-old career criminal. Goldberg emphasized the need to focus on the tragedy of Zarutska's death and how society cares for individuals in need, rather than turning it into a political issue.

The incident, captured on surveillance video, gained national attention. Brown's sister shared a recording of a conversation she had with him after the stabbing, where he mentioned being influenced by certain materials. Brown's mother revealed that he was homeless and struggling with mental health issues, emphasizing that the system had failed him.

Goldberg's plea came in response to media outlets like CNN defending Brown. CNN host Van Jones highlighted the need to understand and address the pain Brown was experiencing, rather than focusing solely on his actions. Brown's criminal history dates back to 2007, with charges including assault and misusing emergency services. Despite previous arrests, Brown was released before the fatal stabbing, prompting criticism from the White House.

Following the murder, Brown has been federally charged, potentially facing the death penalty if convicted. The case has sparked discussions about mental health support and criminal justice system failures in handling individuals like Brown.
