Wildfires in Northwest Colorado

A wildfire that began in northwest Colorado on Saturday has burned approximately 4,000 acres. Two nearby fires, the Lee and Grease Fires, have collectively spread to cover around 5,000 acres. Evacuations and closures are in effect near the fires in Rio Blanco County.

The Elk Fire, situated 10 miles southeast of Meeker, was ignited by lightning during weekend thunderstorms. Fueled by dry conditions and vegetation like pinyon, juniper, and oak brush, the fire has rapidly expanded.

Governor Jared Polis declared a disaster emergency on Sunday in response to the Elk Fire. The Bureau of Land Management reported the loss of one structure and four outbuildings. An evacuation center is established at 200 Main Street in Meeker.

In addition to the Elk Fire, the Lee Fire and Grease Fire are burning southwest of Meeker. These fires, located close to each other, have collectively burned around 5,000 acres.

Evacuation orders are in place for residents near the Elk Fire and Lee Fire, with pre-evacuation notices issued for certain areas. Residents are advised to be prepared to evacuate if necessary. Roads in Rio Blanco County are closed as firefighting efforts continue.
