Yankees boost bullpen with Giants closer Camilo Doval

The New York Yankees' bullpen has faced challenges in recent months, but general manager Brian Cashman made significant changes before the trade deadline on Thursday.

Just before the 6 p.m. ET deadline, the Yankees traded for hard-throwing right-hander Camilo Doval from the San Francisco Giants. In exchange, they sent prospects Jesús Rodríguez, Trystan Vierling, Parks Harber, and Carlos de la Rosa to the Giants.

Camilo Doval, who was an All-Star in 2023, is now part of the Yankees' bullpen. He is under team control until the 2027 season. The Yankees have also added David Bednar and Jake Bird to the bullpen, ensuring their presence beyond 2025.

Doval has shown improvement after a challenging 2024 season. Despite being sent to Triple-A in August last year, he has made significant progress in his pitching techniques. His fastball averages 98.1 mph, making him a valuable addition to the team.

The Yankees' bullpen has transformed from a weakness to a strength in just one day. Manager Aaron Boone had hoped for additional relievers, and the front office delivered by acquiring Doval to complement Bednar in the bullpen.

Doval, 28 years old, has demonstrated his pitching prowess with a powerful cutter and slider. Despite an increase in walks, he maintains a high strikeout rate and has improved his performance in limiting hits.

The Giants focused on acquiring multiple prospects in the trade, with Trystan Vrieling being their top-ranked prospect from the Yankees' system. The Giants see potential in the prospects they received from the Yankees.
