Zarah Sultana Calls Out Jeremy Corbyn for Unsubstantiated Attacks
Former Labour MP Zarah Sultana has accused Jeremy Corbyn and other members of a new left-wing party of making "baseless attacks" on her character. She stated that she is seeking legal advice after an email was sent to supporters inviting them to join the party for £5 a month or £55 a year. Sultana had previously encouraged people to join, claiming over 20,000 had signed up.
Corbyn and four other independent MPs involved in the party released a statement saying the emails were "unauthorised" and advised cancelling any direct debits set up. Allies of Corbyn mentioned they do not support the idea of suing anyone. Corbyn did not comment on Sultana's accusations but expressed determination to officially launch the new party later this year.
The dispute over the membership portal has exposed divisions within the party, which was established in July and is set to hold its founding conference in November. Sultana accused Corbyn and others of running a "sexist boys' club" and claimed she had been marginalized by the party's working group. The party has reported the matter to the UK's data protection watchdog.
Sultana released a statement on Friday night denouncing false and defamatory statements made about her regarding the party's membership portal launch. She labeled these attacks as politically motivated and announced her decision to take legal action. Sultana assured that members' data was not misused and that all funds received were properly protected. Three senior members of the party assured that donations made to the group are secure and mentioned efforts to mediate between Corbyn and Sultana.
